TIG Welding, MIG Welding, and Stick Welding: A Quick Comparison
All our metal legs are designs and fabricated by Xcentric Fab Co. The fabrication process has many different steps, however the most critical for lasting durability is the welding process. There are 3 main types of welding processes that Xcentric uses depending on the application - TIG, MIG or Stick. For this application, we chose to use MIG Welding.
TIG Welding
TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding uses a tungsten electrode to create an arc and heat for welding. It offers precise control and is ideal for intricate and high-quality welds. Commonly used for stainless steel, aluminum, and non-ferrous metals, TIG welding requires advanced skills and more time for operation. It produces visually appealing welds with minimal spatter and distortion.
MIG Welding
MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding involves feeding a consumable wire electrode through a welding gun to create a weld. It is known for its speed and ease of use, making it suitable for beginners and professionals alike. MIG welding is versatile and can be used on various materials such as steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. It allows for high productivity due to the continuous wire feeding system, producing welds with good strength and penetration.
Stick Welding
Stick welding, or Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), uses a flux-coated electrode manually fed into the weld joint. It is versatile and can be used in different environments, including outdoor and remote locations. Stick welding is suitable for welding thick materials and can handle dirty or rusty surfaces. Although it requires more operator skill and produces more spatter, it is commonly used in construction, maintenance, and repair work.
In summary, TIG welding offers precise control and clean welds, MIG welding provides speed, versatility, and ease of use, while stick welding is versatile and suitable for challenging conditions. The choice of welding method depends on factors such as the material, desired weld quality, skill level, and working environment.
